Niro has mailed in about as many games as Vince Carter did in the late stages of playing for the Toronto Raptors. Stallone fell off the face of the earth and only recently he has come back to be a figure yet only in action movies with just a ton of shit blowing up versus actually being a movie. Cop Land is not the greatest movie, but it is a movie featuring these two actors along with some other big names delivering an interesting movie that definitely feels realer than it should be essentially correlating the police officers being their own version of organized crime.
Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Harvey Keitel, Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro, Peter Berg, John Spencer, Michael Rapaport
Genre: Crime drama
Charlie's Ratings: 3.5 out of 5 - This movie hit me in the right spots to call it a good one. I felt like Stallone delivered a pretty solid acting job without doing much. He had to look like a pushover for almost the entire movie, and he did not let his ego get in the way at any point. This is non-traditional role for Stallone and he completely nails it. One of the best Stallone performances out there. Liotta is the only one who could play the role he did in this one, and he played it perfectly. I actually miss seeing Liotta in these roles that he cornered during the 1990's. While Stallone was more docile than usual, Liotta brought the noise in Garrison, New Jersey, the home to cop land as De Niro's character calls it. These two do a great job carrying this movie.
Also Keitel did a great job as the villain of the movie. It is the classic case where people see him as the revered person of the community yet truly an asshole behind close doors. Keitel did a great job in his role although I wish the directors would have made it known what he did with New York Police Department. In a scene, it seems like him and Spencer's characters are both cops yet they feel too old to be there. It would have been useful to see inside the cop station to know what everyone did instead of just seeing them as hit men. Regardless of the flaws, Keitel did a good job acting out his role.
I am not the type of person who yells out stupid things like 'F--- the cops!!!' but if you are that type of person, this movie is for you. This is a classic case of cops looking about as crooked as a three dollar bill which movies tend to portray more often than focusing on the other side of the glass. You do have a classic Stallone scene at the end of the movie that is awesome and if you love him as an actor (They are out there), it is his ideal scene.
