First Taste: Team (Lorde Cover) - CHVRCHES

)

For whatever reason, I seem to find all the CHVRCHES covers that are on the Internet. It is almost like 'Don't worry guys, I got your CHVRCHES covers you guys.'  They are pretty funny about it leading into it mentioning 'We have been doing a lot of covers and this is probably our last one.' Which lets be honest, I highly doubt it. They decide to cover one of my favorite songs off Lorde's True Heroine album with 'Team' and CHVRCHES added their own spin to it giving it more of a funky style to it with a male vocalist on it as well. I like it probably because I think the song is great and this amplifies my appreciation for it when a band can cover it, add their own twist and it still comes out great.  Really hoping CHRVCHES finds its way to Summerfest.

First Taste: Bela Lugosi's Dead - CHVRCHES

This is a cover of a song. This is news to me but thanks to Pretty Much Amazing, I am not going to sound ignorant talking about this one. CHVRCHES keeps hustling out here as I expect them to be a steady feature on many festivals, and it would be really neat if Summerfest decided to bring them to Milwaukee. Their album is absolutely fantastic as it was one of my favorites of 2013. They cover a song by Bauhaus for Vampire Academy, the new movie coming out in a couple weeks. The song definitely feels like something for a vampire, and they do a good job with another cover.

Dougy's Best of 2013: Songs #10
CHVRCHES - "The Mother We Share"

This sizzling electro track is one of the most infectious songs of the year. The song is layered with drum claps and melodic synths with a wide scope that call to mind a female-fronted M83. The chorus "the mother we share will never keep our cold hearts from calling" sounds nostalgic with Lauren Mayberry's saccharine delivery. By the time the "oh"s come to carry this song away, you'll be ready for another listen.

FIDLAR - "Cheap Beer"

The video for Justin Timberlake and Jay Z's "Suit and Tie" features a lavish party, everyone in suits having a great time, drinking expensive drinks. And as much as that makes a great pop song, it just isn't relatable "Cheap Beer" was a much closer description of the social gatherings I attended in 2013: a bunch of friends getting together to get blasted for little cost. Every time I hear the chorus "I drink cheap beer, so what? Fuck you" it brings to mind shabby bars in Milwaukee and our old drinking porch on Water Street in Eau Claire.

Whenever I make one of these lists, I limit myself to one entry per band. If I didn't do that, half my list would be Vampire Weekend and Yeezus. The only reason "Cheap Beer" isn't higher on the list is because I originally heard it in the fall of 2012, but it missed last year's list in favor of "West Coast". The song was officially released on their 2013 debut album and is too awesome not to post for the 20th time. I can't hear this song without craving a cold Old Milwaukee.
