Big Huskers Second Half Buries Badgers

Nebraska basketball is not known for much in college sports. People do not talk about Nebraska basketball and winning, it is just something does not work like lamb and tuna fish. But head coach Tim Miles has led on a renaissance this season with Nebraska making a push into the NCAA Tournament, but they needed a win against Wisconsin on Sunday night in what was perceived to be the Super Bowl of Nebraska basketball. Wisconsin could not handle the Huskers as they fell for the first time in nine games falling 77-68 in a game where Wisconsin was uncharacteristic in many ways missing free throws, turnovers and struggling to handle a transition offense plus should Badger fans push the panic button on Sam Dekker?

Badgers were taken out of their game by Nebraska. This is not your older brother's Badger team where they slow it down and play for the last shot, but at the same time, this Wisconsin team does need some balance to their game. They are not going to run in transition and push the pace of the game. Even with their potent offense, they want to do it in a way that's Wisconsin basketball and nothing else. But Nebraska moved the needle, and it was evident it frustrated the Badgers in more ways than one.

Nebraska forced eleven turnovers on Wisconsin, their highest total since the win against Florida in the second game of the season. A blue chip way to beat the Badgers is getting them to turn the ball over. That rarely happens like an attractive woman talking to me at the bar.  The majority of the turnovers came from Traevon Jackson and Nigel Hayes. For Jackson, that is something Badgers hope is a mere blip on the radar and nothing more, because if he becomes turnover happy in postseason play, it could be curtains for a deep run in March. Hayes is a younger player, and games like these will happen so there should not be much concern there.

The turnovers were not the only thing that hurt Wisconsin on Sunday evening. They missed 10 free throws going a little over 50 percent from the free throw line. When the Badgers suffered some of their defeats this season, it was more so due to the fact, they could not get to the free throw line versus missing free throws. Wisconsin is one of the better teams at shooting free throws coming in a tie for 25th at 73.2 percent so this is likely an aberration and nothing to worry about for the long term.  Additionally, Hayes had the majority of misses for this team. This might be a concern. With his free throw shooting being at a dismal 59 percent, it is hard to make a case why Hayes should be out there late in games if the Badgers are either leading or trailing by a close margin.

Another concern might be the wear and tear of Sam Dekker, the Badgers best player. It seems like he truly needs a couple weeks off versus a couple days. We realize this is not happening, but Dekker does not play until Friday meaning he does get a little time to rest yet he continues to struggle in general. He only had nine points on six shots with only one attempt from three. This is his third straight game where he scored in single digits. In those three games, Dekker is shooting 26.7 percent from the field going 6/22. Additionally, he is only 1/7 from three. What does this mean?  Is Dekker not getting the ball enough where he disengages a bit and disappears from the action?  Or is Dekker not wanting to force shots at this point because he realizes the struggle bus he currently is on?  Not sure, it could be a mix of the two, but if Wisconsin wants a deep run, Dekker needs to be better than the last three games of the season.

Even in the games where Wisconsin hit the rough patch, Dekker did not really have games like this one minus the Ohio State defeat where he only saw 19 minutes on the court. He needs to reestablish himself in Indianapolis as a go-to scorer. If that does not happen, Wisconsin can still win games but it is a lot harder on the four other starters along with the rest of the roster.  For me, Dekker's output in the next couple games will be the most interesting part of Wisconsin.

Badgers likely ran into a buzzsaw in Lincoln with a team desperate for a win plus they saw others fall this weekend. Could it cost them a number one seed? Probably not. If Wisconsin rolls through the Big Ten Tournament beating the likes of Michigan State and Michigan to do it, they probably could be a one seed especially if other teams would happen to fall off the face of the map. The seeding probably will not matter as they will get the in-state advantage unless they lose their first Big Ten game to Minnesota or Penn State. This should be just a blip for the Badgers.

CBB Stock Market: February 14-16

Looking for something else on Sports News on Tap, I found a gem called 'CBB Stock Market' which highlighted what happened on the weekend of college hoops. Sometimes I will use this space for a longer form recap, but mostly, it will be a subheading.

BUY BUY BUY
UConn Huskies - People really should take a look at the Huskies' resume right now. They have only lost four games in conference with UConn winning the last seven of eight. Shabazz Napier had 34 points in an overtime win against Memphis on Saturday putting them in position to have a chance at taking the AAC crown. Huskies still have home games against SMU and Cincinnati with a road trip to Louisville in the final weekend of the season. This is a team that can make a run into the tournament with their guard play and solid interior play as well. Keep an eye on these Huskies.

Florida Gators - Even though they are number two in the nation, it is pretty clear this is the number one team in the nation. Florida won both at Tennessee and Kentucky this week including holding their guard against the Wildcats in the second half. In another year of parity, this is the best team in the nation without question. They have the leadership, size and guard play to get Billy Donovan his third National Championship. Just because they play in the weak SEC means virtually nothing to me. They can play with everyone in the league. I would be interested to see what their record would look like if they were at full strength for the year.

Nebraska Cornhuskers - How about Tim Miles? He has made people believers in Nebraska basketball for maybe the first time ever. They earned a road win against Michigan State on Sunday making the Huskers 6-6 in Big Ten conference with some people thinking they might have NCAA Tournament aspirations. It is not unrealistic at this point with them playing five of their last seven at home with their only difficult game being against Wisconsin in the final game of the season. They have road games against Illinois and Indiana. I mean Nebraska does have a chance here. It is probably unrealistic but as JP said from Angels in the Outfield, 'It could happen.'

HOLD HOLD HOLD
Close calls at home - Three teams in the top 15 nearly lost at home this week. One of them did with Michigan State. Duke beat Maryland by two points with a bad call at the end of the game. St. Louis escaped VCU at home but granted, that would not have been a bad home loss. Syracuse needed a game-winning steal at the end of the game to beat NC State. It is that time of the year when teams are desperate needing a win meaning home upsets are going to happen every now and again.

Michigan State Spartans - Everyone is pointing out the fact they are 3-4 in their last seven games, but this team is not healthy at all. This feels like the classic team that gets hot at the right time and makes its way to the Final Four. Tom Izzo did this before with teams, and let's not forgot, this is a real good team unit when they are all at full strength. Keith Appling and Branden Dawson will be back for the month of March and if the injury bug is done with Michigan State, they are dangerous as anyone. Not that you care my power rankings for March right now would be... Florida, Michigan State (IF healthy), Syracuse, Kansas and Arizona.

SELL SELL SELL
Pac-12 officials - Just a horrible display of officiating in the Arizona-Arizona State game. Jim Burr would be proud. Jahii Carson put an exclamation point on Arizona State's double-overtime win, but he hung at the rim for at least five or six seconds. Fans also rushed the court early, but technically that was not a technical which I have no idea why. Carson should have gotten the technical meaning Arizona getting two shots and the ball back with under one second left. Wildcats might not have won the game, but they still got screwed overall. Kind of hoping we get a rematch of these two teams in the Pac-12 Tournament so Arizona can give them a 'Ball Don't Lie.'

Pittsburgh Panthers - A dirty little secret about this team is they have not beat anyone this year worth a dam. They had close losses to Syracuse and North Carolina, but close losses only count in horseshoes. Looking at Pitt, their best win might be their road win against NC State... YIKES. That's not good at all. They honestly do not play a tough team for the rest of the season unless you call Florida State at home a tough game. Pitt will need to do some work in the ACC Tournament to get a better seed because when it all comes down to it, Pitt could be looking at an eight to ten seed.

CBB Stock Market: January 25-26th

Looking for something else on Sports News on Tap, I found a gem called 'CBB Stock Market' which highlighted what happened on the weekend of college hoops. Sometimes I will use this space for a longer form recap, but mostly, it will be a subheading.

BUY BUY BUY
Michigan Wolverines - All hail to the victors. What can you say about Michigan right now? They are easily the hottest team in the country with winning ten of their last eleven games with their only lost coming to Arizona by a single point in mid-December. I think I have said it at least 20 times but John Beilein is by far my Coach of the Year thus far. He's done yeoman's work with this team. It also has a great deal to do with Nik Stauskas developing into more than just a guy with a silky 3-point jumper. While I enjoy him, I have a feeling he might become very unlikable by March. Another underrated part of this run is Derrick Walton Jr. coming into his own as a point guard.

Florida Gators - Like many forgot about Dre, people have completely forgot Florida. The Gators are on fire as of late including a 26 point win against Tennessee at home on Saturday. They are currently undefeated in the SEC including giving up 50 points or less in the last four SEC games. Additionally, Florida has not lost since December 2nd against UConn where Shabazz Napier hit a game-winner. They have five double-digit scorers meaning any night Florida could have a big performance from the likes of Michael Frazier II or Casey Prather. This also means not every player needs to be on every game night. Florida might be undefeated before heading to Tennessee and Kentucky in the week of February 9th.

Cincinnati Bearcats - Another team that has not lost since mid-December is Cincinnati. People did not really expect from the Cats this season as they lost some tools from a tournament team although Sean Kilpatrick did return for his senior year. Kilpatrick is having a great season shooting 42 percent from the field which is an improvement from last year's clip of 39 percent. Additionally, he is shooting 34 percent from three as well as getting to the free-throw line more often than he did in his first three years.  Justin Jackson also came into his own as a senior with scoring eleven points a game, seven rebounds and three blocks a game. All up from his first three years with the Bearcats. Mick Cronin has done a great job with this program.

HOLD HOLD HOLD
Marcus Smart -  I do not think we should make much of Smart's recent struggles. He did not play really well against Kansas including getting dunked on by Joel Embiid then struggled against West Virginia leading him to do this on the bench. Smart apologized after the game and if we have learned anything from the young players in the nation right now, everyone struggles for a bit during the season. Smart is just taking some hard knocks, he will be fine in the coming weeks.

Providence Friars - Many people are looking towards Providence's hot streak recently because the Friars have not been relevant in the last couple of years. People believed this was the same old Providence squad as they lost three straight in late December and early January yet since then they have reeled off five straight wins with some major victories against Creighton and Xavier, two of the Big East bests. My one knock on Providence which could come back to bite me in the ass is the fact they have yet to win one on the road. In this streak, their only road win is against St. John's and it took double-overtime to do it. They have four of the next five games on the road so we will see if the Friars can keep this up.

Nebraska Cornhuskers - I realize they are 2-5 in the Big Ten, but they had big wins against Ohio State and Minnesota this week. This is an encouraging sign for not only Nebraska's future with Tim Miles but also with the Big Ten as they added Nebraska a couple years ago for 'football' purposes only (Honestly). If Nebraska becomes a threat to beat some teams at home in the next couple of years, that's a really good thing for the conference.

SELL SELL SELL
Baylor Bears - What in the hell happened to Baylor? I ask this question a lot with teams, but Baylor fell completely from the wagon in the last couple of weeks. Bears have now lost four of the last five games although the only bad loss in those games were to Texas Tech. The only problem is Baylor needs a big win quickly with games against Oklahoma State and Kansas on the horizon with West Virginia before them. They need to find a way to win two of the next three or Baylor is on the bubble without question.

First Taste: Bo Pelini won Twitter CFB National Championship

Nebraska's head coach Bo Pelini is almost more known on Twitter for his parody account, @FauxBoPelini. It is a great example of a parody Twitter account done right. In fact, the fake account went past the real Bo Pelini on Twitter in terms of follows. This must have got the attention of a smart intern or someone working with Nebraska's social media team. I know this is true because Pelini picked the perfect time to drop the tweet when every CFB tweeter was on Twitter in the middle of the National Championship. He said this very thing to the fake account.

Fake twitter account's response....

Pretty much purrfect (Oh God that's bad, shut up Charlie)

Quick New Year's Day Bowl Thoughts

This has become an annual tradition where I forget to post my bowl picks for New Year's Day. I was too lazy on New Year's Eve not to post something ready for Wednesday morning. I watched most of three of the games and a little bit of the other ones. My bowl record will be what I had in the confidence picks for Sportandfashion-news and I will give a couple quick thoughts about the games because I know you want to know I care about these bowl games along with a prediction for tonight's game.

North Texas 36 UNLV 14
- The beginning of my usual New Year's Day collapse. I have no idea why I thought UNLV was the better  team in this one.

- North Texas defense looked really good in this one. Their offense did not have a very impressive game, but they shut down the Runnin' Rebels.

- Thank goodness for Utah State or the Mountain West would have been shutout of bowl wins including them getting their asses kicked in three of them.

LSU 21 Iowa 14
-NO DREW TATE MOMENT :(

- Pretty boring game, but Iowa definitely had a chance to tie this one up multiple times in the second half, they could not get put points on the board.

- Jeremy Hill is a beast going for over 200 yards including a 27 yard touchdown run with about two minutes left to go in the game.

Nebraska 24 Georgia 19
- Ameer Abdullah with another big game for the Cornhuskers and if he stays next year, there could be some rumblings for Heisman next year.

- 99 yard touchdowns are always cool and proved to be the difference in this one scoring a win for the Big Ten against the SEC.

- WE NEED A GRUDGE MATCH NEXT YEAR.

South Carolina 34 Wisconsin 24
- I wrote about this here.

Michigan State 24 Stanford 20
- There are three games this season where my confidence pick was different than how I felt before the game started... Utah State, Ole Miss and Michigan State. I switched my pick after Max Bullough's suspension.

- I would put this right up there with the best games I watched all season. It had everything you wanted from a football game. Sparty really has something going here with their football team and think they can be a threat for years.

- I would love to see Michigan State against Auburn or Florida State. I think they would give both teams a game without question. Their offense has came together to help out their terrifying defense.

- Not a good look at all for David Shaw and his playcalling. He really needs to start thinking about an offensive coordinator.

UCF 52 Baylor 42
- It really stunned me Baylor played like absolute shit. Their defense had improved from years past, and it seemed like they were over getting completely boat raced by competent offenses.

- People really disrespected Central Florida and Blake Bortles all season including me. UCF is the real deal, and George O'Leary has done a wonderful job building this program.

- I had no idea why Sean McDonough kept being up the resume scandal that was about 10 years stale. Build a bridge, get over it.

Sugar Bowl
Oklahoma vs. Alabama 7:30 pm ESPN - The narrative has begun about Alabama not really wanting to be there tonight but let's be honest, does Oklahoma really deserve to be there?  Sooners finished strong, but given what we saw from the Big 12 last night, I think it is fair to say we could see a game over by halftime. A.J. McCarron already came out and denied a Senior Bowl request meaning he will want to have a big game plus I expect Nick Saban to showcase him as much as possible plus Saban's defense can force some turnovers on this Oklahoma offense. I would be shocked if the Crimson Tide do not win by more than double-digits. BAMA 38-17

Bowl Record: 18-11
