Better Game Winner? - Tyler Ennis or LeBron James

There were two great game-winners in both college basketball and the NBA.  Let's start in college where Tyler Ennis kept Syracuse undefeated by hitting about a 35 to 40 footer for the win. This looks a lot like Ben Brust's game-tyer to force overtime from last year when he drilled Michigan. For whatever reason, Pittsburgh's head coach Jamie Dixon called a timeout to let Cuse set a play and Ennis nailed it as a second option. The best part was probably Jim Boeheim telling ESPN's Doris Burke, 'Well the thing is Tyler played his worst game of the season before that.'  Do you Jimmy B. Do you. Syracuse continues their undefeated season.

Now we have LeBron James. Dare I say he made a little bit of a statement. I know I have called Kevin Durant MVP as well as a bunch of others. In a big game that should have been televised somewhere (Actually it was on NBAtv, why it was not on at the bar last night is beyond me), James went for 36 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists netting a near triple-double against Golden State. This game featured a classic showdown between James and Stephen Curry.  It came down to the last shot and James delivered with a deep three with only .01 seconds left in the game. I wish Golden State was a little bit better because a Miami-Golden State NBA Finals would be absolutely fantastic. It is too bad they can only play twice this season.

Roundball Wrap-up: Wednesday January 29th

Your favorite inconsistent NBA post is back from last year!  I never really had a full grasp on how to do this blog, but I think I have figured it out. There will be similar elements from Bucks Buzz, but in reality, it will be its own post on Wednesday (Or Thursday). I do not really have a time for when it will be up but there will be all sorts of random shit I happen to come across on the Internet plus some thoughts about the week that was.

Players of the Week
Carmelo Anthony - We gave him this award a couple weeks ago, and I almost disagreed with myself doing it yet now this is a deserving award for Melo. He dropped 62 points on Friday against Charlotte, which is more impressive than you think because Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is a much better defender than a causal fan might believe him to be. To see Melo in a zone like that is something special, and something only a few guys can do in the NBA. People love to give Carmelo a hard time, but it is hard to say he does not fill up the stat sheet. Anthony gets criticized a bunch, but this is yet another example that he is a top ten basketball player without question. Melo followed it up this week with 35 points against Los Angeles Lakers and 24 points with nine rebounds in a win against Boston. Melo might get some MVP votes if he wills this New York team to a five or sixth seed as this is not a good team besides Carmelo.

LaMarcus Aldridge - Honestly, many contenders for this one as Terrence Ross' 51 point effort deserves some love, Anthony Davis playing strong and Stephen Curry doing the damn thing yet I went with LAM. I do not think it is a coincidence Aldridge had a career-high 44 points with 13 rebounds against Denver after he did not get selected as an All-Star starter. Aldridge pulled down another big game against Memphis' big men having 27 points and 16 rebounds. On Friday, he only had six rebounds which is his lowest total since January 7th. Aldridge is averaging 13 rebounds a game this month which is a whole rebound above his yearlong average. LAM is playing like the man.

This week in Kevin Durant
A new segment I am introducing because we need it at this point. I could have gave Kevin Durant another player of the week honor. I mean the man is a MONSTER right now comparable to Buster Bluth and his hook hand. Durant had a triple-double on Saturday to lead Oklahoma City in a victory over Boston and then he dropped 41 points against Atlanta on Monday night including a game-winner over THREE Hawks defender. Durant has 30 points or more in this last eleven games, the last player to do that was Shaquille O'Neal and oh yeah, he plays Miami tonight. EVERYTHING IS COMING UP DURANT. Here's the GIF of the game-winner. (H/T @SBNation GIF)

'I am not mad, I am disappointed' Player of the Week
NBA Fans - Goddammit. It never fails that the All-Star game voting has one insanely dumb player selected to be a starter. This year it is Kobe Bryant. I understand Kobe has a great deal of fans, but... THIS GUY TOLD YOU NOT TO VOTE FOR HIM. Kobe stated 'Let one of the young guys in' a la Damian Lillard. It sounds like no matter what, Kobe is missing the All-Star Game. Reports were he was out four more weeks with a knee injury meaning Bryant will likely not be ready for the All-Star Game. I am happy fans will not have the satisfaction of seeing Bryant out there with guys who have played their asses off this season.

Team of the Week
Oklahoma City Thunder - We already talked about Durant, and yes, he has a great deal to do with it. Yet the Thunder are red hot. They have pulled away from the pack in the Western Conference as they won nine of their last ten games. Oklahoma City is beating good teams during the streak as they took down Houston, San Antonio, Golden State and Portland. It is one thing to win nine of ten against the inferior Eastern Conference, and it is another thing to beat four Western Conference playoff teams. Oklahoma City is easily the best team in the Western Conference right now, and they are doing it without Russell Westbrook.

Team of the Weak
Detroit Pistons - I honestly have no idea how they did not make it last week. I mean we needed to point out New Orleans struggles, but Detroit have lost five of their last six games with two of those losses being to Utah and Milwaukee, the league's two worst teams. How Maurice Cheeks still has a job is amazing. I mean I want that job security life. Same goes for Joe Dumars, maybe more so with Dumars. This man gave an asinine amount of money to Charlie Villaneuva and Ben Gordon along with not controlling Josh Smith whose on pace to shoot 300 three-pointers. Last part is more on Cheeks than it is Dumars, but both these guys should be gone.

Sportandfashion-news Medical Injury Report
San Antonio Spurs - What's really weird about San Antonio is with how good this team has been through the last decade, it seems recently they go through a stretch where everyone is injured leading to everybody giving up on San Antonio. Kawhi Leonard is out with a broken finger for a month. Tiago Splitter has a bum shoulder, but might be back soon. Danny Green is not coming back for a month. Manu Ginobili's hamstring is giving him problems right now. This team is banged up to the highest degree.

This should have been a DOY. We all make mistakes. Sick dunk from Damian Lillard.

LaLa Anthony says her husband, Carmelo Anthony, will stay in New York and explains why he does not get pregame sex which leads me to a question... What's the percentage of NBA guys having sex before a game? (Larry Brown Sports)

Trade Value By Position: Point Guards

Being that I love the NBA, I'm going to break down, position by position, the players with the most trade value at this point in time.

The point guard position is probably the most dominant position in the NBA right now. There is a ton of talent across the league at this position as the NBA has become a smaller and smaller league overall.

You look at guys like Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose and Chris Paul and you see that they are extremely important to their teams but how do they rank against each other in trade value around the league?
These are the point guards who would get the most in return for their team.

(Note: this piece takes injuries and injury history into consideration.)

Index:
PER: Player Efficiency Rating - Overall production per minute, league average is 15.
TS%: True Shooting percentage - Takes into account all types the shots (2s, 3s and free throws)
AST%: Assist percentage - Amount of teammates' field goals he's assisted.

1. Chris Paul, 28 years old, Los Angeles Clippers - Contract: (First year) 5 years, $107 million  -

I understand that he's injured and won't be back for a while but this guy is the quintessential point guard. Not only does he make the teammates around him so much better (had a 54 percent assist percentage before hurting his shoulder) but he can also knock down just about any shot you give him. There's a reason he's the highest paid point guard. He's got a huge contract to live up to but CP3 is in his prime and considering the way his team is set up around him, that shouldn't be a problem.

2. Tony Parker, 31 years old, San Antonio Spurs - Contract: (Third year) 4 years, $50 million -

In typical Spurs fashion, Parker is that point guard that is underpaid and underrated around the league but not here. He's not going to sneak under my radar. Parker has led the Spurs (along with Tim Duncan) to three NBA titles including one in his rookie year. The scary thing about Tony Parker is that it seems like he's gotten even better the last few years. He's so quick and can finish around the rim with the best of them. He's already drawn 37 "And-1s" so far this year, according to Basketball-Reference and has a TS% of 57 percent.

3. Russell Westbrook, 25 years old, Oklahoma City Thunder - Contract: (Second year) 5 years, $78.5 million -

Russy is also hurt but is apparently off his crutches after undergoing his third knee operation since April and could return pretty soon. OKC better hope Westbrook gets back soon as they haven't been the same in his absence. Sure, they're still 28-10 overall but they're only 5-4 in Westbrook's absence and the offense has struggled. Westbrook doesn't shoot the greatest percentage but the threat of him getting to the hole at will opens up shots for shot-maker Kevin Durant. Westbrook only being 25 helps his value here.

4. Eric Bledsoe, 24 years old, Phoenix Suns - Contract: (Final year of rookie deal) -

Bledsoe with the Suns.
As you could have guessed by the theme here, Bledsoe is also currently injured but I don't think his trade value has taken a hit whatsoever. I'm really trying not to overvalue Bledsoe because he's only 24 but youth obviously benefits The Bledshow here. Many basketball minds wondered how Bledsoe would fair in an expanded role with Phoenix and also how he would fair alongside another point guard in Goran Dragic but those questions have been answered. Bledsoe was averaging 18 ppg and 6 assists per game with a PER of -20 before going down "indefinitely" with a knee injury. "Mini-LeBron" is certain to sign a huge offer sheet and Phoenix will be forced to match. The Bucks had to be pretty close to getting him as he was traded to Phoenix in the three team deal between Phoenix, LA Clippers and Milwaukee. It still haunts me that they couldn't land him and probably always will.

5. Derrick Rose, 25 years old, Chicago Bulls - Contract: (Second year) 5 years, $93 million -

The fact that Rose hasn't really played in what will be two full NBA seasons hurts his value here. Honestly, had that first knee injury never happened, he'd probably be number one on this list. So before you charge my place of residence with torches, understand that I'm aware of the All-World Derrick Rose possesses. I'd at least listen probably any trade presented to the Bucks for him, despite the injuries. You really don't need advanced stats to see the impact D-Rose has on a basketball game. He's just so fast and is too big and strong to be defended by guys his own size. He's learned how to shoot over time as well. Hopefully (or maybe not), Rose gets healthy and can get back to where he was. Rose will probably still be a matchup nightmare when he gets back, despite blowing out both knees over the past two years.

6. Steph Curry, 25 years old, Golden State Warriors - Contract: (First year) 4 years, $44 million -

Curry probably cost himself a better contract by being fairly injury prone over his first two or three seasons but the Warriors handed Curry the extension based on what he could/would become. He really broke out last year when we started 78 games for the Dubs and shot 45.3 percent from beyond the arc. This year he's shooting 44. 5 percent of his shots from three but his TS% is 57 percent. While his three point shooting numbers a down a bit (still better than the league average) his overall shooting has gotten better. Curry also passes the eye test, at least for me. Just like his jumper, his passing is so smooth and pretty. He really makes a lot of hard shots look easy, as seen below:

7. Damian Lillard, 23 years old, Portland TrailBlazers - Contract: (second year of rookie deal) -

The difficulty of trying to justify putting Lillard seventh just exemplifies the talent at the point guard position in the NBA right now. Lillard won the rookie of the year last year and has taken that next step. The Blazers are making me eat crow this year after I accused them of being stuck in the mediocrity treadmill. Well, Lillard and forward LaMarcus Aldridge and their supporting cast have jumped out to a 28-9 start and are in second place in the Western Conference. The way he's projecting, talk to me in a calendar year and Lillard is probably easily in the top 5 of this list. He's raised his TS% from 54.6 percent last year to 58.3 percent thus far this season. This rising star's stock continues to rise by the day.

8. Kyrie Irving, 21 years old, Cleveland Cavaliers - Contract: (Third year of rookie deal) -

The number one overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft hasn't entirely disappointed but I think many fans and pundits expected more out of Irving and the Cavs this season. Irving's numbers pretty much across the board are down from his first two seasons. Still, Irving is very young and is a building block for Cleveland going forward. The whispers of LeBron going back to Cleveland after this season are going to get louder and louder (just speculation) as the season nears the end. I think Irving with LeBron is a great one-two punch and would compete for a championship right away.

9. John Wall, 23 years old, Washington Wizards - Contract: (Final year of rookie deal; entering 5 year, $80 million max contract next year) -

Wall is also former number one overall pick and he's been pretty solid. His youth benefits his trade value over some of the guys I might put behind him. People really took note of John Wall's impact last year when the Wizards went 5-28 to start the year without Wall and then played around .500 ball with him to finish the year with 29 wins. This year, he's averaging 19.6 points per game and 8.6 assists per game but his team has been rather inconsistent this year. However, when you think about it, Wall's supporting cast hasn't been the greatest. Nene is always hurt and Marcin Gortat's numbers are a bit down. Bradley Beal has been a little banged up but is having a pretty nice year but hasn't been efficient. Wall's teammates will have to stay healthy for the Wiz to end up better than the eighth seed in the weak East.

10. Goran Dragic, 27 years old, Phoenix Suns - Contract: (Second year) 4 years, $30 million -

Dragic sneaks into the list by the skin of his teeth. However, if you combine his great play and his reasonable contract, it's not that far-fetched. Let's be honest, the Suns were supposed to be bottom feeders (putting it lightly) this year and Dragic is a big reason why they're playing above their heads. His pick and roll game is top-notch. His advanced stats are up across the board, notably, TS% up to 59.2 percent from 54 percent last year. Also, his turnover percentage is down to 14.1 per 100 possesions from nearly 17 percent per 100 last year. Taking care of the ball is job number one for a point guard. The Suns had two point guards make the list so it'll be interesting to see if they try to move one of them (most likely Dragic) before the deadline or in the offseason. It's a nice problem to have.

Bucks Buzz: January 9 - Free K-Midd

Even though it has been a bad year for Milwaukee thus far, Mitch Pratt and Charlie Tritschler will provide you with a bi-weekly update on the Bucks ranging from recaps, links and other neat stuff.

Quick Recap:

Tuesday vs. Golden State: Warriors 101 Bucks 80

Another night, another double-digit loss. The Bucks are now 7-27 on the season and after reports of a fight/shouting match going on between Larry Sanders and Gary Neal happening on Saturday night after their loss in Phoenix, the Bucks have ostensibly hit rock bottom. I'm going to withhold judgement on whether I think it's "rock bottom" or not because I think it can definitely get worse than it already is.

Gary Neal is apparently being shopped now for any taker. Thank you, John Hammond and Herb Kohl. Some of us were worried that the Bucks would see all this bad PR from Larry Sanders and try to make him the scapegoat and move him. I applaud Larry trying to be a leader and beaking a veteran "leader" for being a chucker and just looking for his shot. Unfortunately, the Bucks are losing night in and night out so this looks really bad. Again, the timing for Sanders is bad as well so people are going to pile on him some more. I think he just wants the team to play cohesively and that hasn't happened hardly at all this year.

As far as the game, it was your typical Bucks game this season. They hung around for the most part into the third quarter but before you know it, they're down by 15-20 points in the fourth quarter and it's suddenly game over. David Lee had a big night offensively but again showed me why that call him "Avid Lee" (no D) while trying to defend Ersan Ilyasova. 'Sova is anything but athletic and he was getting around Lee and getting to the basket. It was fairly entertaining. Ironically, watching Illy defend Lee was also a nightmare and probably set the game of basketball back a few days. Our boy Giannis had a nice night dishing the ball (five assists) but there's some concern that he's a little too passive when it comes to getting/taking shots. I wouldn't worry as he's young and still figuring things out but it's something to watch I suppose.

The Dubs had a really balanced effort overall and Steph Curry put on his show for the Milwaukee faithful. He makes some incredibly tough shots and really leaves you nearly speechless at times. Good to see the Warriors get back to playing good basketball, though. They were hanging back around the nine seed in the West before this epic road trip that the Warriors went on. They lost last night in Brooklyn, forfeiting their chance to be the first team to achieve a 7-0 road trip in NBA history. Now, after a 6-1 road trip, they're comfortably back in that six seed in the Western conference.

Appropriate YouTube video: "Warrior Mentality"

This video isn't necessarily pertinent to the game itself but it's one of my all-time YouTube faves. These guys name off all the obscure Warriors' players that were on the team between playoff appearances. If you're a fan of randon trivia, it gets good. Trust me.

There's a SaveOurBucks.com t-shirt handout at Loaded Slate before the game on Friday against the Chicago Bulls. These are typically home games for the Bulls but maybe if word gets out about these free t-shirts, we can take back the Bradley Center from the FIBs and "Bulls fans". Just scroll down and read the OP's post for details.

From Bucksketball: An article about OJ Mayo possibly going a little heavy on the mayo since he's been in Milwaukee. I recently questioned OJ's heart on twitter and the fact that he's plumped up a bit basically confirms my questioning. He was publicly called out by Rick Carlisle last year so this shouldn't surprise anyone.

What to watch

Obviously, be on the lookout for a Gary Neal trade sooner rather than later (good riddance) and as I touched on above, keep an on Giannis perhaps being more aggressive offensively.

Also, can we get Khris Middleton back in the starting lineup? Jesus Martha. This guy clearly should be starting for the Bucks but Larry Drew has been starting Luke Ridnour instead. We've got nothing to lose at this point. He's been reduced to playing with the bench mob that typically consists of the likes of Mayo and Caron Butler. Yikes.

This isn't directly related to the Bucks but keep an eye on whether or not Jabari Parker, who is Mormon, goes on a two-year LDS mission trip after being drafted. I'd be on suicide watch if the Bucks took him and then he went on a mission. Who's a Mormon anyway?

What's next?

The Bucks take on the Bulls at the BC on Friday, get out there and show you're SaveOurBucks support. The Bulls will, once again, be trying to out-tank us so expect to see Joakim Noah and any other impact players sitting out this one.

Then, they'll travel to Oklahoma City on Saturday to get destroyed by Kevin Durant and the Thunder. I needn't say much else. The tank rolls on.
