Goodell makes some sound points to Rich Eisen regarding how 'automatic' extra points have become, and now they put a little more strategy into coaching. Per Goodell comments, one proposal sounds like the correct one where they give a team seven points automatically, but a team has a chance to add another point if they want. We could see an increase of Chip Kelly's first touchdown two-point conversion if this is the case, but I am for the idea if it means we see less commercials in a football game. It definitely creates a more fascinating game of football which is always what Goodell wants with his game.
Nothing is worse than getting a situation where a touchdown happens including the extra point then a commercial, back for a kickoff then another commercial. It is one of the worst things in America. There is a possibility with eliminating the extra point, they can avoid some of that hopefully. If they go straight into the kickoff versus having to assemble a group of guys on the field for the extra point, it seems logical that they can avoid having basically seven minutes of commercials and one minute of action. This could be the best thing about having no extra points. Obviously, television companies cannot be supporting the 'no extra point movement' nor gamblers. It makes lines a little more difficult to judge on a weekly basis which might be a part of Goodell's plan.
Another thing maybe forgotten or lost in the process is field goal kicking would change because of it as well. Getting rid of the extra point would make it harder to kick field goals without question. If a kicker is strictly a field goal kicker versus one who handles kickoffs, he could be completely cold for an entire game minus a couple kickoffs and be thrown into the final minute without having his long-snapper nor his protection in front of him be ready. One of the other complaints lately has been how automatic field goals have become, and I think this would contribute to make them tougher.
That's the thing with the commissioner and why he makes people upset. It never seems like he does one move rather one move stars an avalanche of new moves. We know how serious the NFL is taking concussions, and there have been some talk of getting rid of the kickoff. If they get rid of the extra point, it could start the process of removing kickers from the game entirely. Field goals are something that people are getting annoyed with too in the whole scheme of 'it is too easy to score points', and they want to find a way to curb scoring. I hope this is not what Goodell is thinking about when ridding the game of the extra point. Kickers might get a hard time but they are a huge part of what makes the game, football.
This is a Goodell move where I am giving him the a-okay. Now if he decides to start making kickers extinct like the dinosaurs, there might be some issues with it. Until then, give me two-point conversions throughout the game or give me death.
